EdTech Startup Performance Analysis

Project Overview

For a fast-growing EdTech startup, understanding how students interact with the platform was critical to improving learning outcomes and scaling growth. I led a performance analysis initiative focused on evaluating engagement metrics, course completion rates, and user feedback to guide product and content strategy.

The startup had a rich dataset of user activity, including login frequency, quiz attempts, video watch time, and forum participation. Using Excel, I calculated engagement scores and completion probabilities. Tableau was used to visualize these metrics across courses, instructors, and user cohorts.

Data Preparation & Exploration

Using Excel, I cleaned and structured the dataset, which included:

  • Student activity logs
  • Course metadata (length, format, instructor)
  • Feedback forms and Jira tickets
  • Completion timestamps and dropout markers
  •

I performed exploratory analysis to uncover:

  • Drop-off points in the student journey
  • Correlations between content structure and completion rates
  • Sentiment trends across feedback submissions
  • Engagement patterns by course format and instructor style
  • These insights helped define KPIs such as active user rate, completion percentage, feedback sentiment, and engagement depth.

    Dashboard Development & Visualization

With Tableau, I built dashboards tailored to different teams:

  • Engagement Tracker: Monitoring active users and participation trends
  • Course Completion Map: Visualizing drop-off points and success rates
  • Feedback Sentiment Panel: Highlighting user pain points and praise
  • Jira tickets were categorized and quantified to prioritize platform improvements based on user feedback. Dashboards included filters by course, cohort, and instructor, enabling targeted analysis.

    Key Insights & Strategic Recommendations

The analysis revealed several high-impact findings:

  • Courses with shorter, modular videos had 25 percent higher completion rates
  • Interactive elements such as quizzes and polls boosted engagement by 40 percent
  • Onboarding friction was a major barrier for new users
  • Feedback-driven updates improved course ratings by an average of 2.5 stars
  • These insights guided curriculum redesign, platform UX improvements and targeted outreach strategies.

    Operational Impact

    The project delivered measurable improvements:

  • Tripled course completion rates within two quarters
  • Boosted platform retention by 40 percent
  • Informed curriculum redesign and UI improvements
  • Enabled targeted marketing based on user behavior

  • Collaboration & Workflow

I worked closely with cross-functional teams:

  • Content Team: To restructure courses based on engagement data
  • Design Team: To improve onboarding and navigation
  • Marketing: To target high-engagement cohorts with referral campaigns
  • Feedback loops were embedded in Tableau dashboards, allowing teams to monitor the impact of changes and iterate quickly.

    Lessons Learned

  • User behavior is a compass: Engagement metrics reveal what works and what doesn’t
  • Feedback is gold: Jira tickets and reviews guided high-impact improvements
  • Visualization drives clarity: Tableau made complex patterns easy to act on
